What goals do
I’m a fan of the jobs-to-be-done framework developed by Clayton Christensen.
So, what’s the job of a goal?
The most important job of a goal isn’t really to get us to meet the goal. Meeting the spec of whatever goal you’ve set is the bonus you get.
Rather, the job of any goal you set is to support you into becoming the kind of person (or group of people) capable of easily achieving that goal.
Do the work along with your goals. → Become. → And you get rewarded with the results.
Keep this on repeat.
