Gaming the algorithm

Gaming the algorithm

I’ve been in spaces where entrepreneurs and creators gather. One of the most dreadful fears I’ve heard is not being favoured by the algorithms that govern the platforms they share on.

The good news is that it’s not the algorithm you need to appease, it’s the people you seek to serve. The bad news is that it’s not the algorithm you need to appease, it’s the people you seek to serve.

The surest way to game the algorithm is to make things your audience wants. Make things that are authentic. And make them with care, kindness, and with gusto. Make things that truly move the needle for people, and they’ll find you - regardless of the changes made by the companies that govern the algorithm.

Most quick fixes and hacks won’t last. Over the long term, the algorithm follows the choices made by your audience. It’s often not the other way around.

If your product is the best thing that gets the job done for people. If it solves a problem they are care about. And if it helps them become better versions of themselves, they will tell their friends about you. Their friends will search for you. If it works for them, they tell others. Overtime, the algorithm respects their choices.
